What are the focal points of the Rothschild's planning task?
Mustafa Alkan: The appeal of this task lies in preserving the aura of the original building from 1900 and at the same time transforming it in a contemporary way through precise changes and technical innovations. Due to the preservation order, we have to be cautious and consider monument preservation as a central aspect. This means that we have to preserve the condition with particular care, which is reflected in its value.
It is important that all changes comply with the requirements of structural engineering specifications and monument protection regulations. During the remodelling and refurbishment, we attach particular importance to integrating the history of the building in a contemporary and respectful way. A communal room on the ground floor plays a special role in this. This room is primarily intended for the residents, but should also be accessible to visitors. Here we would like to commemorate the history of the site with exhibitions and information boards.
How is the building itself brought into focus?
Mustafa Alkan: If we look at the building as an outer shell and look at pictures from the past or from the time after its completion, we can see that it was originally an impressive building. Over the course of time, extensions were added that served the purpose and did not do justice to the essence of the castle. All these elements are now being dismantled in order to restore the building to its original state. Our aim is to return the building to its former splendour.
What does this approach mean for the changes in the interiors?
Mustafa Alkan: The robust and heavy appearance of the exterior is transformed into a bright and open interior. As soon as you enter the building, the size of the building is revealed in a transparent way: the deliberate creation of galleries allows a view from the ground floor through to the roof. We combine the original storey heights with open and generous room zoning. Characteristic features of the original building are carefully renovated and restored.
Each unit is given its own name that reflects its quality. This means that the special features of the architectural epoch of the time, such as arches, round elements, gables and arcades, are particularly evident in the respective units.
Light and shadow play a role here, as do the view and the integration of nature into the home. The surrounding Black Forest, which extends right up to the edge of the property, can be experienced from every residential unit.
In the outdoor area around the Rothschild, there are elements used exclusively for the house community, such as a barbecue area, seating and lounging areas and a yoga deck
A communal room, which is perfect for socialising, is located in the entrance area of the building.
